Cancer Nutrition Counseling
One-on-one meetings with Greta Macaire, RD (registered
dietitian) are available free to UCSF patients.

Appointments are scheduled for Tuesday through Friday between
9:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Appointments are held in the Ida &
Joseph Friend Cancer Resource Center, located at Mount
Zion Medical Center, 1600 Divisadero Street, 1st
floor, Room B101.

Peer Support Program
The
Peer Support Program offers cancer patients the opportunity
to speak with veteran patients, others who have already ‘been
there.’ The goals of the program are to match cancer patients
to veteran patients in order to:

reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety and fear |

assist in the development of coping skills |
| |
help navigate the health care experience |
| |
increase a sense of hope in dealing with cancer |

problems with constipation or diarrhea |

Ida & Joseph Friend Cancer Resource Center
The Ida & Joseph Friend Cancer Resource Center supports
wellness and the healing process by providing patients, families,
and others with information and treatment options, emotional
support, and community resources. The Ida & Joseph Friend
Cancer Resource Center maintains a library of books and other
media; provides access to the internet and specialized health
databases; and offers personalized research assistance. We host
diverse support groups, exercise classes, workshops and direct
people to other community resources. All Ida & Joseph
Friend Cancer Resource Center programs are free.
Symptom Management Service
The Symptom Management Service (SMS) is a consultation service
offered to improve the quality of life and care of patients treated
at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer
Center. Patients can be referred to the SMS by their UCSF cancer
doctor. Patients will be seen by one or more of the members of
the SMS interdisciplinary team. The SMS provides treatment and
counseling for both physical and emotional symptoms caused as
a result of cancer. This includes treatment for pain, fatigue,
depression, anxiety and spiritual distress. Treatments for these
symptoms include integrated medical, psychological, social work
and spiritual approaches, offered along with your regular cancer
care. All SMS care is coordinated with your cancer treatments
and the support of your cancer doctor.

Bladder Cancer
Bladder Cancer Education and Support Group
Support for patients, partners, caregivers
and family. Presenters change monthly.
The group is facilitated by Karen Schanche, MSW, LCSW
The group meets from 5:30-7:00 PM. In 2009 the group will meet
on the third Wednesday of every month. In 2010 the group will
meet on the 1st Thursday of every month. Scheduled presenters

IMPACT
IMPACT is a state-funded program designed to
improve access, counseling and treatment for Californians with
prostate cancer. The program’s mission is to provide high
quality prostate cancer treatment to low-income men with little
or no health insurance. For more information about qualifying
