Andrology
The University of California San Francisco offers a two year
clinical and research fellowship in andrology. The fellowship
program seeks to nurture creativity and excellence in the scientific
aspects of andrology, and to encourage fellows to become academic
leaders. The first year is devoted
to clinical and basic laboratory research; the second
year is devoted to clinical education and training. The
combined infertility and impotence program is conducted under
the guidance of Tom
Lue, MD.
During the research year the fellow is required to conduct 12
months of focused research with a mentor in one of the following
areas: male genetic infertility, molecular biology of erectile
dysfunction, epidemiology of infertility, or molecular biology
of testis cancer. Each fellow will develop: a thorough understanding
of the scientific method, the skills needed to conceive and execute
successful scientific research, and the effective communication
skills necessary for presentation and publication of research.
During the clinical year the fellow will rotate on a daily basis
among 3 institutions within the department. The fellowship includes
clinical training in erectile dysfunction, male infertility, and
male reproductive endocrinology. The fellow will consult on a variety of acute problems including
priapism, adult testis torsion, epididymitis, penile fracture
and other penoscrotal trauma. Each fellow will develop: the comprehensive
clinical algorithms for the management of patients with infertility
and sexual dysfunction, the provider-management skill set necessary
for efficient and effective outpatient care of andrology patients,
the macrosurgical and microsurgical skills appropriate for andrology
care, and a skill set for the teaching and training of colleagues,
urology residents, and medical and college students.
Application Process
The andrology fellowship is open to persons who have completed
a residency program in urology, are licensable in the state
of California and will preferably be a candidate for American
Board of Urology.
The program accepts one fellow every year. Applicants will be
selected through the AUA sponsored matching program. Applications
are due by April for a July match date in the year before actual
matriculation in the fellowship. Interviews are conducted
after the application is complete and before the match date.
The selected fellow will begin the program in July of the following
year. (i.e. Decisions are made in 2008 for a July 2009 start.)
For more details about the match please visit the AUA American
Urological Association's website.
