Leslee L. Subak, MD

Research Interests

Leslee Subak, MD, who joined the urology faculty in 2007, holds appointments in three UCSF School of Medicine departments. After earning her MD at Stanford University, she served as administrative chief resident in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at UCSF, subsequently completing concurrent fellowships at UCSF in epidemiology and clinical research, and in urogynecology and pelvic surgery. She has served on the UCSF faculty since 1997. Subak directs the UCSF Women’s Health Clinical Research Center Fellowship and co-directs the Women’s Reproductive Health Research Career Development Program. She also serves on the International Collaborative Research Group on Bladder Dysfunction sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and has been on the 1st through 4th International Consultations on Incontinence Committee on the Socio-Economic Impact of Urinary Incontinence sponsored by the World Health Organization and International Continence Society. She is principal investigator on several federally funded research projects evaluating the treatment of urinary incontinence in women, with particular emphasis on the effects of weight reduction on improving symptoms in obese women, and the economics and cost-effectiveness of interventions for incontinence.

She is co-principal investigator of the Biostatistics and Data Management Core in the UCSF Specialized Center of Research on Lower Urinary Tract Function in Women (SCOR). The SCORE funds a collaborative group of basic and clinical investigators doing translational research on the female urethra, bladder and pelvic floor, as well as urinary incontinence. This multidisciplinary group includes members of the UCSF Departments of Epidemiology & Biostatistics; Family Practice; Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences; and Urology. The SCOR provides an efficient mechanism for development and completion of collaborative, multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary translational research.

As an internationally recognized leader in the economic analyses of incontinence, Subak has been a member of the Socio-Economic Impact of Urinary Incontinence Committee for the International Consultation on Incontinence sponsored by the International Continence Society and the World Health Organization. She is the principal investigator for the NIDDK funded Economic Analyses of the PRIDE (E-PRIDE), a study to evaluate costs, utilities and cost-effectiveness of the PRIDE interventions. Subak is also principal investigator of the NIDDK sponsored Economic Evaluation of the Urinary Incontinence Treatment Network (E-UITN) which conducts clinical trials to assess the cost effectiveness of incontinence interventions being evaluated in three ongoing randomized trials.
