James Smith, MD, MS received his undergraduate training from
the University of California, Berkeley, where he obtained a
degree in molecular biology with high honors. He then enrolled
in The University of California's Joint Medical Program, a partnership
between Berkeley's
School of Public Health and San Francisco's
School of Medicine. In the Joint Medical Program Smith earned
a master's degree in health and medical science in 2000 and
his medical degree in 2002. Smith completed his general surgery
and urology training at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City,
returning to the University of California, San Francisco as an
Andrology Fellow for advanced clinical and epidemiologic training
in male reproductive health, erectile dysfunction and Peyronie's
disease under the guidance of Tom
Lue, MD and Ira Sharlip, MD.
Smith is part of the multidisciplinary team that evaluates and
treats men with fertility problems, erectile dysfunction, and
Peyronie’s disease. He specializes in the use of microsurgical
vasovasostomy, vasoepididymostomy, sperm retrieval and varicocelectomy.
He is very interested in the role lifestyle factors play in the
risk and treatment of male infertility. Smith also provides consultations
and complete diagnostic evaluations for men with erectile dysfunction
and Peyronie's disease; he utilizes cutting edge medical and
surgical treatments to treat these conditions and conducts
research to explore new treatment options for men with Peyronies's
disease. Smith is an active member of the American Urological
Association, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine,
and the Sexual Medicine Society of North America.
