Brown, who has been UCSF faculty in the department of Obstetrics,
Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences since 1986, joined the Department
of Urology with a joint appointment in December 2002.
In 1990, Brown founded and became director of the UCSF
Women's Continence Center. The UCSF Women's Continence Center
is a multidisciplinary practice that incorporates physicians from
gynecology, urology, and colorectal surgery to provide expert,
timely and innovative care. In 1993, while maintaining her faculty
appointment, Brown began and completed a two-year fellowship in
Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Clinical Research at UCSF. The
fellowship supplied Brown with the tools needed to build a multidisciplinary
group of basic and clinical investigators. This group conducts
translational research on the female urethra, bladder, and pelvic
floor and urinary incontinence in women. Brown’s appointment
in Urology will help to foster collaborations, such as the UCSF
Women's Specialized Center of Research on Lower Urinary Tract
Function in Women. This Office of Research on Women's Health
/ National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
(NIDDK) funded program
is lead by Brown and Urology Vice Chair, Tom
Lue, MD
Brown is a nationally and internationally recognized urogynecology
clinician and leader in clinical research on lower urinary tract
function in women. She has a strong federally funded research
program, numerous publications, and serves as an advisor to the
National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her advisory role includes
participation in NIH advisory boards, study sections and on two
Data Safety and Monitorying Boards: the National Institute of
Child Health and Development Pelvic Floor Disorders Network and
the NIDDK Interstitial Cystitis Clinical Trials Group. Brown's
current research focuses on lower urinary tract dysfunction and
urinary incontinence in women with diabetes. She has funding from
the NIDDK to conduct research advancing knowledge in this area.
Funding includes an investigator initiated mid-career investigator
award, and two subcontracts on large diabetes intervention trials.
Brown is chair of the NIDDK Urologic Complications of Diabetes
Working Group.
