Urologic
Oncology
The Urologic Oncology program focuses on the investigation and
management of urologic cancers: cancers of the prostate, bladder,
kidney, testis and genitalia. It is the goal of the Urologic Oncology
Program to provide timely, innovative, expert and compassionate
care to those with urological malignancies or those at risk of
developing them. Treatment plans are tailored to individual patient
needs.
A multidisciplinary approach both in laboratory and clinical
settings is emphasized. Members of this program are well-recognized
clinicians and basic scientists who have contributed significantly
to their fields. Their record of development of innovative patient
treatment schemes, accrual to clinical studies, publication and
funding is superior.
A broad-based translational research program is underway which
includes researchers from a variety of disciplines. We feel that
important insights into prevention, diagnosis and treatment will
be based on close collaboration between our research program and
faculty from many departments and divisions here at UCSF, including
Biochemistry and Biophysics, Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology,
Anatomy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pathology, Medicine, Laboratory
Medicine, Urology, Radiation Oncology and Radiology.
Currently, grants or awards totaling in excess of one million
dollars have been awarded to members of this program. The program
was recognized in 2000 when it was awarded a Specialized Program
of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant by the National Cancer Institute
(NCI). UCSF features one of the best, most comprehensive prostate
cancer research programs in the United States. In addition, many
program members have established research collaborations on other
NCI-funded grants.
