Endourology

The endourology program has been an integral part of our urology program for the past 25 years. It began in the late 1980’s with the advent of minimally invasive surgery for the management of urinary stones. We were one of the first centers to utilize extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy, and spearheaded one of the FDA trials for a second-generation machine. We also have developed a variety of instruments for ureteroscopic and percutaneous management of urinary stone disease. Multiple patents have been issued for novel, unique instrumentation.

More recently we have utilized laparoscopy to access genitourinary structures to expand our minimally invasive approach. More than 150 urologists from around the country have participated in our post-graduate course with formal hands-on instruction. We continue to be a major referral center for both extirpative and reconstructive laparoscopic urologic surgery.

Research efforts have been directed to better understand the etiology of urinary stone disease. We have leveraged information from a variety of large databases to better understand the systemic implications of urinary stone disease. More specifically we have found an association of coronary heart disease with urinary stones in both men and elderly white women. This has profound implications into long-term medical management.

We are presently investigating the impact of diet on urinary stone disease. Additionally, we are developing a novel animal model to assess the genetic impact on nephrolithiasis.
